About SYN

SYN is a youth-run media organisation that provides training and broadcast opportunities for young Australians.

Our values:

  • Access: SYN provides access for all young people to participate in its programs.
  • Independence: SYN acts autonomously in the production of content.
  • Participation: SYN empowers young people to take an active role in its training and programming.
  • Diversity: SYN encourages and supports a range of youth perspectives, cultures and ideas.
  • Innovation: SYN is creative and adaptable in its media output and operations.

SYN offers young people aged 12-25 the skills and platforms to be creators, not consumers, of media.

SYN Radio broadcasts on 90.7 FM in Melbourne and streams live right here.

Our television programs screen on Channel 31 Melbourne & Geelong.

Our plans for the future are here in the 2011 SYN Strategic Plan - we invite you to have a look at our goals and get in touch if you'd like to collaborate with us to achieve our objectives.

Membership

To be a volunteer at SYN, you must be aged 12-25 and be an active member of the organisation. Being a member gives you opportunies to participate in SYN's training, media-making and behind-the-scenes activities.

If you're aged over 26, you can still be a member of the organisation despite not being able to participate in SYN's media making activities. By being a financial member of SYN, you get to have a say in how the organisation is governed by voting in the Board of Management at our Annual General Meeting every year.

Membership costs $5 for under 18s, $15 concession and $25 full.

History

SYN Media (the Student Youth Network Inc.) was formed in 2000 as a result of a merger between two youth radio projects: 3TD (an AM station run by high school students from Thornbury-Darebin Secondary College) and SRA (Student Radio Association), the RMIT University radio station that also spawned 3RRR in 1976.

Board & Staff

SYN is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by the SYN membership, who offer their time and expertise voluntarily to our organisation.

The SYN staff carry out the administration and organisational management of SYN. These people work with our amazing volunteers to make SYN's strategy come to life.

Volunteers

SYN’s volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. They are all aged 12-25, and they take on jobs across nearly all facets of the media-making process: as producers, presenters, technical crew, promotions, music, reception, and web coordinators.

Our audiences

SYN continues to tap into the hearts of Melbourne's youth - young people aged 15-24 only make up 18% of Melbourne's overall population, yet this group forms 54% of SYN's audience.

We're making unique radio and TV for young people in their own city, and they're tuning in loyally.

Advertise on SYN

If you're running a business, event or organisation and you want to reach young people, you should take advantage of SYN's on-air sponsorship packages.

Our radio, TV and web audiences are engaged and active young people. Send them your message by becoming a SYN sponsor.

SYN Alumni

Youth is temporary, and so people move on from SYN. We have a large network of ex-volunteers who have left the building, but who remain in our hearts (awww).

We keep in touch with our SYN alumni via a regular e-newsletter to this special group of people. If you're an ex-volunteer who'd like to receive these updates, drop us a line!
