Top Acts Interview

 Nat spoke to Jessie and Vincent, two talented young performers taking part in the VCE Season of Excellence Top Acts concert. Jessie is a contemporary ballet dancer, while Vincent wows the crowd on the tabla, a type of Indian drum. They spoke about the VCE experience, and their aspirations in performing arts.

Life In Movement Review

 Arts Mitten reviewer Robbie checks out this touching documentary about the late Sydney Dance Company choreographer Tanja Liedtke, who was appointed artistic director of the company at just 29, and just before losing her life in a traffic accident. The film takes a look at the art of dance, creativity and our own mortality.

The Plague Dances with Four Larks Theatre - Interview

You may have heard of SARS and Swine flu, but have you ever heard of a dancing epidemic? Jesse Rasmussen from Four Larks Theatre caught up with Nat and Finbar to talk about The Plague Dances, their new play based on real historical dance epidemics, which involved a contagion causing people to dance uncontrollably and even to their deaths. It takes a critical look at msas hysteria through the ages.

Danceclass: A community dance project

For this week's Live Reception segment, Renae went to find out more about a community dance project called Danceclass that features Homemade, a diverse group of dancers who met at public dance classes. 
 
Danceclass was directed by renowned local choreographers Alisdair Macindoe, Adam Wheeler, Kristy Ayre, Luke George and Jo Lloyd.

Tombola at The Hub in Brunswick

Renae talked to dancer and choreographer Heidi McKerrow about Tombola: Traversing the Unknown, which is Heidi's debut contemporary dance production, and her goal to eventually transform Tombola into a work specifically for dance schools to perform.

Small Odysseys by Rawcus at Arts House

Renae talked to Kate Sulan, the artistic director of the performance company Rawcus. Rawcus is based in Melbourne and devises works that draw on dance, theatre and visual art disciplines.Their latest production is called Small Odysseys and it is a stunning work that incorporates elements of dance, theatre, visual imagery and magic realism and involves performers with disabilities.

Dance and Kinetic Sculptures in Chunky Move's Connected

A very innovative production on this year's Dance Massive Festival program is Chunky Move's Connected, created by internationally renowned choreographer Gideon Obarzanek in collaboration with the American artist/sculptor Reuban Margoalin.  Florence talked to Harriet Ritchie, one of the five dancers in Connected about dancing while being harnessed to some amazing techno-kinetic wave sculptures.

Choreographer Simon Hoy chats to Liv about the Melbourne Ballet and their December 09 concerts

In December Simon Hoy spoke to me about his upcoming dance pieces for the Melbourne Ballet Company featuring music by Chopin and Shostakovich and focussing heavily on classic ballet technique. He took me through the creative process and discussed the music and why he chose these pieces to present his work.
We also chat about the Melbourne Ballet Company and the local professional dance landscape in Victoria.
