On the 8th February 2013, Federal Minister for Environment Tony Bourke announced that he would reject advice from the Australian Heritage Council to protect 433,000 hectares with a National Heritage Listing.

 

Instead he is going to see that a National Heritage Listing is applied to a coastal stretch of 21,000 hectares the Tarkin region. This ammounts to only 4% of the original recommendations.

Pope Benedict XVI - The resignation

1.2 Billion Catholics across the world have been shocked by the resignation of Pope Benedict 16th.
 
He was Elected to the papalcy at age 78 and resigned at age 85 making him the first pope in close to 600 years to step down.

Children in Detention

 Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young’s release of drawing made by children in detention in Manus Island has re-invigorated concern about the human impact of mandatory detention.  

Pamela Curr from the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre told us how those who have been granted asylum are plagued for years after with the after effects of detention. We asked if a focus on the rights of children within the debate is cutting through.

Barack Obama - 2nd Presidential Inauguration Speech

 With over 1 million Americans at his feet at the National Mall in Washington DC Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term as US President.
 
The highlights of his speech included a promise to combat climate change as well as an unexpected focus on the rights of the gay and lesbian community.
 
Georgina Connery spoke with Marcus O'Donnell, Journalism Program Convenor at the University of Woolongong about the significance of the inauguration speech.

Australia Day - what do you think?

With Australia Day weekend upon us, patriotism is everywhere. For some its a celebration of our history, for other a holiday. For many Australia day is exclusionary, or even referred to as " Invasion Day"

Wonthaggi Desalination Plant - what is water worth?

 
Victoria's Wonthaggi desalination plant remains idle, with Water Minister Peter Walsh making it his personal goal not to order water from the plant. This is costing Victorians 1.8 million dollars a day!
 
Cost issues and industrial relations scandals have plagued the development of the plant. The plant was completed in December of 2012 but will cost the state tax payers 24 billion dollars over the next 28 years.

SCOPE - Young Ambassadors Conference and "See Me September"

 
SCOPE work to provide services to thousands of people with a disability across Victoria so they are well supported to achieve their potential. 
 
This conference involves young Victorian students coming together to experience life with a disability. SCOPE through this campaign and conference are asking that the communtiy see ther person, rather than the disabilty.
