Sharing online: where does it go?

Have you ever stopped to consider where that status update, photo or video might go after you've put in on Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites?

On Panorama we took a look at the consequences of sharing too much. You might pay the price later on when applying for jobs or houses in the near future. 

 

Also, we find out how advertising are targeting what they are selling us by working with Facebook to understand what we might want to buy.

While mapping streets across 30 countries for Google Maps' "street view" this year, Google cars with cameras on top also picked up our private information from unprotected wireless-internet networks.

Do you ever think about who reads what you post on your Facebook or Twitter account?

Catherine Deveny was recently fired from The Age because of inappropriate comments on her Twitter page, saying that she hopes Bindi Irwin "gets laid" and that Rove's new wife "doesn't die too".

Most people don't realise that everything they post online will exist in cyberspace forever...and could come back to haunt them. Rebecca Vukovic reports.
