America Decides: Expert Analysis

Barack Obama has won a second term as Preisent of the United States of America, beating Mitt Romney with 303 electoral college votes. As part of Panorama's election special, Sally Whyte spoke to Nick Sharman from the University of Melbourne about the result and what it means.

We see Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on TV every day, but it takes thousands of people to get a president elected. Sally Whyte spoke to Matt McMurray, a Field organiser for the Democratic party in Michigan while he waited for results.

La Trobe Humanities and Social Services Cuts

La Trobe University has announced a proposed re-structure to the humanities and social sciences faculty, which has been met with protest across the university. A number of subjects, including Indonesian, Gender Diversity and Sexuality, Linguistics, Art History, and Spirituality and Religion, will no longer be taught. The La Trobe Student Union are concerned that there was not adequate consultation with the student body, with the five week consultation period coinciding with exams and mid-year uni holidays.

Melbourne Votes - Cathy Oke

 On July 21, Melbournians will go to the polls to vote in the by-election for the state seat of Melbourne after the retirement of Bronwyn Pike. The Liberals decided not to contest the seat, leaving the Greens and Labor to fight over the votes of the inner suburbs. Cathy Oke, a Melbourne City Councillor, is representing the Greens in what is tipped to be the party's first win in the Victorian Lower House. Sally spok to Cathy Oke, as well as the Labor candidate Jennifer Kanis.

 Voters in Melbourne's inner suburbs will go to the polls on Saturday in the by-election for the state seat of Melbourne. Labor stalwart Bronwyn Pike has retired, leaving Jennifer Kanis to contest the seat on behalf of the ALP, which has held the seat since 1908. Construction workers want Ted's Head

 Melbourne’s CBD was brought to a halt today by thousands of construction workers who walked off the job to protest Ted Baillieu’s changes to workplace laws. Natalie Tencic filed this report.

Asylum Seeker Emergency - the latest

One person is confirmed to have died after a boat carrying asylum seekers capsized off Christmas Island today. Authorities are continuing to search for survivors from the boat which is believed to have been carrying Afghani women and children, 123 of which have been rescued so far. This follows the deaths of 90 people on Thursday last week when another boat sunk on route to Christmas Island. As people were fished out of the Indian Ocean, debate raged in Canberra over the best way to stop asylum seekers getting on boats to Australia.

Rio+20 - what's going on?

 World leaders, environmental groups and journalists have converged on Rio de Janeiro to discuss climate change, sustainable development and hopefully put together a document agreeing to courses of action that help the world economy develop in a way that doesn’t harm the environment. The conference starts on June 20 and Julia Gillard and Environment Minister Tony Burke will attend. Sally Whyte spoke to Dr Daniel Bray from La Trobe University to find out what Rio+20 is all about.

AUSLAN Silent Protest

Hundreds of people marched silently through Melbourne today to protest the axing of Victoria’s only diploma level AUSLAN course. We brought you the news on Panorama last week that Kangan TAFE was planning on cutting their AUSLAN course, leaving students already enrolled in the lurch. Jess O’Callaghan has this report on the protest.
