Writers Block #2: The Importance of Setting

The writing exercises for this week aim to help us draw inspiration from our surroundings CLICK ON READ MORE

1.) Plan to visit two or three new places or suburbs that you wouldn’t usually go this week. Alternatively, go somewhere during an unusual time- You can even try sitting in your backyard at night! Sit in this place and do a stream of consciousness, starting with describing what you can see, smell and hear around you. Let these descriptions of your surroundings be a launching pad for lots of different ideas to flow out from your consciousness. Then reread what you’ve written and keep any parts you like to develop into a story.  It can just be one line or one description that you can use as a metaphor in a piece of writing

2.) Go around and try to spot anything that stands out to you, perhaps a strange or abandoned object.  Describe it and then make up a story for it- How it got there, who made it or even who used to own itetc.
