Cheltenham fire

Firefighters were called to a Cheltenham gym in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Fire Rescue Victoria says they found smoke and flames in a single storey brick factory but no one was found inside the building.

It took them 28 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.

Religious discrimination promise

Christian Schools Australia has welcomed a promise by the prime minister to protect religious freedom.

Anthony Albanese met with faith leaders and school representatives on Friday.

The group’s public policy director Mark Spencer said, ”We welcome the Prime Minister’s promise, but it needs to be backed up by action.”

The prime minister is seeking broad support for a new religious discrimination law.

Preston crash

Police are asking for help after a car crash on Saturday night.

They say a car stolen from Mont Albert over a week ago hit a brick wall at a property in Preston.

Investigators were told three men fled the scene after the crash but were not able to find them.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

AFL: Cats d. Kangaroos

The Geelong Cats have beaten North Melbourne 139 points to 64.

Jeremy Cameron kicked six goals for the Cats to help the team stay unbeaten for the season.

Meanwhile, Eddie Ford kicked three for the Kangaroos but the team is second-last on the ladder.

The Kangaroos players wore black armbands in memory of Ashlee Good who died in Saturday’s Bondi stabbings.
