Local favourite Mall Grab (Jordon Alexander) touched down from London town, to deliver a string of high energy shows across Australia and New Zealand. The ‘Looking For Trouble’ tour marks a decade since the Newcastle-born producer first broke onto the scene.
I’ve caught his sets at Beyond The Valley’s Dance Dome and iconic Naarm venues like the Forum, but nothing hit quite like his biggest headline show yet at Port Melbourne’s Industrial Centre for the Arts (PICA). Australian support acts Oots and Claire O’Brien warmed up the crowd perfectly, before his 2.5 hour slot.
I really appreciated how Mall Grab’s set covered a variety of genres, including UKG, techno, house and drum and bass, yet this didn’t take away from a well-balanced and paced show. Fans of Skepta and ONEFOUR were in for a treat, as several edits were dropped throughout the night. The tastemaker stayed true to his style while enticing audiences with fresh flips on beloved classics like Armand Van Helden and Duane Harden’s ‘U Don’t Know Me’. His popular tracks ‘Love Reigns’ and ‘Liverpool Street In The Rain’ never fail to excite his crowds, plus his final song ‘Everything’ was well received by punters.
To whoever the lighting technicians were: I love you. The V-shaped units hanging along the warehouse ceiling were a standout feature. One of the most euphoric moments came when the sequence of slow, pulsating rainbow lights appeared during ‘iluv (vip)’ — a drum and bass remix of his 2024 collaboration with Effy. Mall Grab brought his magic to his hometown shows, and this was the cherry on top of a fabulous evening.
