Tyler, The Creator colours Melbourne with his ‘CHROMAKOPIA’ tour

Following the release of two studio albums within 9 months,
CHROMAKOPIA and DON’T TAP THE GLASS, American alt hip hop
sensation Tyler, The Creator delivered a vibrant, jam-packed show across 4
nights at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.
International favourites Lil Yachty and Paris Texas were the opening acts
for Australia and New Zealand’s leg of the tour.
Staging was simple but on brand, made up of tall green CHROMAKOPIA
branded shipping containers. The coloured on screen visuals and loud
pyrotechnics in the beginning set the tone for a huge evening ahead.
Before you know it, Tyler is strutting down the catwalk in a bold red leather
set. He oozes cool from top to bottom.
Tyler’s energy was strong from the start. He opened the show with ‘Big
Poe’, the first track from his latest album which features Pharrell Williams
and Sk8brd. This built the perfect foundation for one of my favourites to
follow next: ‘Sugar On My Tongue’. It’s got a sweet, intoxicating hook which
the audience had no problem chanting along to. The mosh was already
jumping at this point! As someone who had never been to one of Tyler’s
shows before, it was at this moment that I realised just how much I’d been
missing out on.
Tyler leans into his artistic vision in such an eccentric, yet authentic way. He
commands the stage with big, charismatic dance moments while also being
able to step back and hold space for deeper lyrics present in songs like
‘Judge Judy’ and ‘Like Him’.
There was rarely a dull moment in his setlist. He covered a fair spread of
his discography, with tracks like ‘She’, ‘IFHY’ and ‘See You Again’ making
an appearance. Sticky, Tamale and NEW MAGIC WAND were my other
personal favourites from the show. These tracks absolutely POPPED OFF.
My soul felt like it was having an out of body experience.
The ‘CHROMAKOPIA’ tour marked Tyler, The Creator’s first Australian shows in 3 years and wow... it was well worth the wait.
