Are you SYN's next General Manager?

We’re looking for an outstanding General Manager who’s ready to lead SYN into our next chapter. With an ambitious vision and goals for the future of SYN already in place, you will be ready to take on the challenge, with a clear sense of where we’re going and an ability to take us in this new direction. 

You will have a healthy appetite for risk, an interest in generating new revenue streams (including fundraising), and outstanding leadership and stakeholder management skills. You are thorough and intuitive and take a creative approach to problem solving, are great with people and have an ability to bring out the best in others. You are passionate about youth participation and the potential for young people to reach an audience through media making.

 

Position Overview
The General Manager is responsible for the effective leadership and support of SYNs staff and volunteers, developing strong relationships with external stakeholders, effective financial management and sustainability and ensuring SYN is a supportive and inclusive environment for people of all ages, skills, abilities and cultural backgrounds. The General Manager works closely with and is supported by the SYN Board.

 

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • An understanding of, and experience within the community broadcasting sector, the broader youth, media or arts sectors; and/or not for profit sector  
  • Experience providing leadership, support and guidance to teams, 
  • The ability to create, implement and deliver on strategic and/or operational plans 
  • Experience managing relationships and communicating with internal and external stakeholders at multiple levels. 
  • Proven experience in budgeting and financial management, including overseeing departmental budgets, preparing financial reports, and ensuring responsible expenditure aligned with strategic goals. 
  • Experience implementing fundraising and revenue generation initiatives for community radio/not for profit organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and laterally in problem solving, considering multiple options and determining solutions that take into consider the bigger picture  
  • Experience managing the operational requirements of a team or business area e.g.  policies, procedures, resources, records, records, office space and equipment. 
  • Experience with the HR requirements of team management including recruitment, performance management and development of staff and volunteers and maintain a commitment to diversity. 

Desirable  

  • Experience working with (young) volunteers
  • A working knowledge and understanding of broadcast regulation and the changing nature of the media in Australia 
  • Experience reporting to a not-for-profit board
